How We Created a Deepfake of a Deepfake in 20 Minutes
We jumped into the fascinating yet alarming world of deepfakes, a technology that's quickly reshaping our digital environment. We started this experience when Deutsche Telekom released a video about this topic, and we asked ourselves, how convincing can a video created by us be? (low budget, no support, small team). So, we embarked on the journey.
Deepfakes, for those unfamiliar, are synthetic media where the likeness of one person is replaced by another, using artificial intelligence (AI). From Hollywood celebrities to politicians – to children, anyone can be a target, and the results are so convincing it's often challenging to distinguish between reality and deepfake. In the past, such high-level manipulation required substantial resources and technical expertise. Today, thanks to advancements in AI, it's become frighteningly easy to create copies of us online, saying things we would – or would not say – at lightning speed.
The Process of Crafting a Deepfake
Creating a deepfake, despite its complex final output, is relatively straightforward. The process involves feeding a machine learning algorithm, typically a variant of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), with numerous images or videos of the target. The more data you provide, the more accurate the deepfake tends to be. Once the machine has learned the target's features, it can generate new images or videos that are practically indistinguishable from the real thing. This process is called 'training,' and it can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the complexity of the deepfake and the processing power available. The Experiment
We decided to experiment and create our own deepfake of Telekom’s video, and we wanted to do it in just 20 minutes. First, we started with their existing video. In less than 20 minutes, our system learned the facial features of our target. and was able to generate a new video. The result was a fascinating, albeit slightly unnerving, demonstration of just how powerful this technology can be.

Parents need to be aware of the potential risks of sharenting and take steps to protect their children's privacy. This could include limiting the number of photos shared, only sharing on channels with known followers, and using privacy settings on social media – all while being very careful about which moments they choose to share online.
